Neville Frank Longbottom

Herbology Professor

Gryffindor Alumni

A year after the war, Neville decided to try his hand at becoming an auror. Deciding that wasn't the correct line of work for him, he decided to set off and travel the world, looking for plants. Though he tried to keep in touch with most of his friends, he hates to admit he fell a little out of touch.

After two years, he received a word of the passing of his grandmother, and decided it was time to head home.

I… I don’t know what to say. I’m worried Molly. I’ll go out and look for her, maybe Ron and owana could look…

Frank looked at he man, as he remained quiet. That man came everyday he could to see him and his wife, to stay with them, ell them stories and take care of them. He was the most adorable bloke. He remembered when he was simply a chubby boy, but that boy was in the past. Now he was totally different, but his eyes showed that same timeless cuteness. Those eyes, he saw them for years, but he knew he saw them anywhere else. His mind began filling with color and light. A raven-haired woman, laughing evilly. Frank and Alice, tied and suffering an incredible, unforgivable pain. But no, he didn’t remembered that those eyes were present in the scene. More images rushed. Alice, with dark chocolate hair, a beautiful bride dress, Frank kissing her sweetly. But no, he still couldn’t find them. One more try…he entered to a pastel green room, which had a crib in the center. He took from it a baby, with rosy cheeks and a beam on his face. His giggles were audible in the whole room as Frank tickled his belly. There, those eyes were staring at him.

He was his son. The man was his son. Frank didn’t knew he had a son…but there he was. His mind was still in the room with the cradle. He gazed at the room’s door, that had a golden N on the white background. Whichever the man’s name was, it had to begin with a “N”. Frank’s hand went up to the young man’s cheek, cupping it mildly. It was his son, after so many time he just realized it. “N-n….” He tried to say. What was his bloody name. He only pictured the golden N, that, and the beautiful eyes that made him see the truth.

He couldn’t remember them before, before the attack, before the hospital. Neville couldn’t remember most of his childhood, he always wondered if that was something he inherited from his parents, or if it was just him. Gran never let him go back to that house either. He had no idea what his room looked like, or his crib, any of it. She told him it would only upset him further, and refused to tell him anymore. Neville’s mouth fell open, he was now absolutely convinced he was dreaming. He’d never even heard his father’s voice, he didn’t think it possible. His mother, she was always babbling to herself, and she could laugh, but his father had always remained silent. He considered calling in one of the healers, just to be sure what he was hearing was real.

His hand clutched the frail one that found his cheek, eyes searching, pleading for him to find the word, the one he had picked for his son. “Neville, Dad, it’s Neville.” His impatience got to him.

askmollyweasley sent: You're back in town? No one told me that. Oh, I'm not sure. It appears Ginny is missing! Her Quidditch captain said she left for home over the weekend but never returned on Monday. Avery said she hadn't seen her. She assumed she ran off to find you. --Molly

Molly,

To be quite honest, I hadn’t really gotten around to telling anyone I was back in town yet. What do you mean she’s missing? I just saw her the other night.

Frank looked at the ceiling, as his fingers interlaced and both of his hands laid on his belly. His mind was in blank, nothing came, nothing happened. At least nothing that could have sense at all. His hair was grey, almost white, and his face was skinny and pale. He always was brave, strong and loyal; and he proved it when he remained with them, even if the cost was his own sanity. He began moving his head to the left, and to the right, just because he wanted.

Alice’s bony hands were twirling and playing with a tiny daisy, as a smile, as small as the white flower was visible on her white face. Unlike Frank, she liked to play around, sometimes, she even danced around with Lockhart. She was like a little girl on a playground. After what happened, she could still smile.

Frank rested his head on his pillow, about to fall asleep when he heard a voice. Quite familiar. It was him, that boy he cherished so much. Frank looked at him, a weak beam upon his face. He reached one of his hands to touch the young man’s hand, as he looked at him.

Years of travel were showing on the young man. His shoulders were broader, he had no trace left of the baby fat that had plagued him all these years, and even his hands were callused and rough from working with dirt and rock. He had been getting ready to leave, to go talk to the staff about their progress, if there was any, when he felt the light touch on his hand and stared down at it. He almost wondered if it had been his imagination, his father rarely moved from his catatonic state. Neville sat there frozen, afraid to move, afraid to look up, he didn’t want this moment to not be real, he was afraid if he moved even an inch, he’d wake up and be in bed, disappointed as ever.

Though, he did look up, right into his father’s eyes, his eyes, the ones he had gotten from him, and what he saw there, he couldn’t believe. He saw the faintest of recognition. No, Neville thought to himself, it can’t be. It’s just my imagination. He spent nineteen years coming here, seeing them. Nineteen years of guilty disappointment and longing for parents like everyone else. Then, his father smiled, and a single tear escaped Neville’s eyes. “Do you-” He stopped himself, feeling rather ridiculous all of a sudden. He shook his head, he was used to talking to himself when he came in. “Do you know who I am?”

Neville stepped into the cold room. He wished he could decorate it, but he didn’t know them well enough. His gran had tried, but even she gave up eventually. He smiled when he saw the vase of flowers by his mother’s bed, Avery was usually good at stopping by to make sure they were replaced when she was working.

It had been two years since he had seen his parents, and as excited as he was to see them again and tell them about his travels, he wasn’t ready to see their blank expressions. It didn’t stop him from talking to them, but he wished, just once, they would be able to talk back, tell him they were proud. After everything he had been through, didn’t he deserve that?

He sat on the edge of his dad’s bed first, “Hey dad. I know it’s been a while, but I’ve been traveling.”

She brought her hand to cup his cheek, cutting off his statement, “Because my dear sweet Neville, you are not going to remember this. The party or the conversation we had, and most importantly my connection to Barty. As far as you know, the story the ministry released is true. You are here because you just got back from your travels and you came to see me, you are now leaving.”

The compulsion would work better on him than anyone, it was just better this way. “Now stand up.” She got to her feet as well, ready to show him out.

Neville blinked, and rubbed the back of his head awkwardly, “I’m sorry, I must have lost my train of thought.” He grinned at her. He was so happy to see her safe, after she had been captured and tortured by Barty, he was afraid the man would come back for her, and finish her off. He dreaded getting owl while he was away, fearful of the news they would bring, but seeing her standing here, alive and well, he couldn’t help but smile.

When she pulled him into a hug, he gladly returned it, but he couldn’t help but feel like she was sadder in that moment than he remembered, like he had missed something, something important, but there was nothing he could do about it. She released him, and saw him out. He went home that night, relieved and happy, only then did he remember he hadn’t seen Ginny.

The incident with the ministry seemed so long ago, she had almost forgotten about it. “Yes. I should have, but we took measures to make sure I wouldn’t.” She explained. “I also left willingly when he came for me, I wasn’t forced to go.” His nodding told her he had expected as much. “You know, knowing this makes you an accessory, but I wouldn’t blame you if you turned me in. I would.”

She turned her gaze downwards again, the subject was still slightly touchy. “I was turned to be used against him. As a weapon.” She chewed on her lip before continuing, “I made him forget me. Forget what we had, next time he sees me, he won’t know who I am, he may even kill me, but it’ll be better for him.” She stopped herself from telling him about Ginny. As much as she wanted to hurt her, she didn’t want to hurt Neville. She could tell him in her own time.

“I’m not going to turn you in, even if I’m absolutely disgusted with you right now.” He wanted to hit something. Even if they weren’t together anymore, it didn’t mean he felt any less love for her, this was Avery, his rock, he’d been there for him when no one else could, it was no wonder Barty went after her, there was more in it for him, because she could be used against both of them.

He had one other question, one he was afraid to ask, “Why are you telling me all this now? I know I asked, but usually you just dodge it…” That’s when it hit him what she was going to do, but it was too late, she already had him locked in a gaze.
